6 STEPS FOR AN EASIER MOVE

STEP #1

6 to 8 Weeks before your move

• Schedule a date for your move. If your moving date needs to change please let your mover know ASAP.

• Now is the time to decide which items your mover will transported to your new home or business. Unwanted items can be given to family or friends, donated to a local charity or sold in a garage sale. What ever your decision all unwanted items should be disposed of at least 2 weeks prior to the move. Remember the cost of your move is based on the weight of all items moved.

• If you will be packing some or all of your possessions start collecting moving and packing supplies now. You can purchase all these materials from A. Alliance or a moving supply company. Boxes that you purchase from A. Alliance or a moving supply company are designed for the moving industry to help prevent damages to your belongings. Boxes you get from work or various stores often are to weak and come in odd sizes. This will make it difficult to ensure all items can be loaded in the moving van and can result in damage to items inside the boxes.

• Create a floor plan of your new home this will help reduce the stress and the movers time when the boxes and furniture arrives at your home.

• Contact the local Chamber of Commerce for help on schools, community programs, parks and recreation facilities. See Link Page for help.

• Begin making travel arrangements (hotel, flights, car rental, etc.) for your family.

• Keep all moving receipts in a folder. Many moving expenses are tax deductible. Obtain an IRS Change of Address form, Form 8822, by calling (800) 829-1040 or visiting the IRS website at www.irs.gov website. You will be able to download and print form 8822 and most other IRS tax forms; e.g., Form 3903 to help deduct moving expenses.

• Finalize all real estate and rental needs.

• Contact your insurance agent to transfer medical, property, fire and auto insurance.

• All medical vaccinations and dental records should be placed in a safe place. Now is a good time to contact your family doctor for referrals and to ensure all prescriptions can be transfer to your new location.

• Plan on taking all important documents, such as wills, stock certificates, and other one of a kind items (jewelry, coin collection, photos etc.) with you.

• Notify schools in the old and new location and arrange for the transfer of school records and begin the process of registering your children in their new schools.
